Faculty and Graduate Student Honors & Awards

 

Corly Brooke, HDFS Professor and Interim Chair, has been awarded an 2009 Impact Award. This award is given by The Iowa State University Alumni Association Board of Directors to recognize individuals, businesses, organizations, or units whose programs or accomplishments brought broad recognition to the university and increased the involvement of ISU constituents in the life of the university.


Cheryl Troutman Chatman, MS Child Development 1976, has been awarded the Alumni Achievement Award by the College of Human Sciences. The award recognizes College of Human Sciences alumni for meritorious service and/or distinguished achievements in areas such as business and industry, education, family and consumer sciences, and health.


Kandauda (K.A.S.) Wickrama, HDFS Professor, has recieved the 2009 Career Achievement in Research Award. Wickrama’s diverse research interests include the impact of family life on health; racial and ethnic differences in mental and physical well-being; international development; and the application of advanced statistical methods to his field.


Mary Jane Brotherson, HDFS Professor, has recieved the 2009 Diversity Enhancement Award. This award recognizes outstanding performance in enhancing diversity in departmental, college, or university programs at Iowa State University.

Peter Martin, HDFS Professor, has been awarded the 2009 Regents Award for Faculty Exellence. This award recognizes a faculty member who is an understanding university citizen who has rendered significant service to Iowa State and/or the state of Iowa. Additional criteria for the award is that the faculty member must have distinction in a minimum of two of the following four areas: teaching, research/creative activity, extension/professional

Sedahlia Crase, HDFS Professor, has been named a University Professor. The title recognizes her for serving as a change agent, improving the university, demonstrating effective leadership, advancing cross-disciplinary education, and providing exceptional teaching and service to graduate students and non-traditional learners.

Markie L.C. Blumer, HDFS Ph.D. Graduate, received the 2008 Iowa State University Graduate College Research Excellence Award Recepient.

 

Pat Walsh, HDFS Academic Advisor, has been awarded a Champion Award for advancing ISU learning communities. The award distinguishes Walsh as an unassuming advocate who mentors other team leaders while supporting growth of the HDFS learning team, connecting students and enriching their experiences.

 

Mary Sue Green, HDFS Doctoral Student in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program, has been chosen for the 2008 National Council on Family Relations Student Award. Green was also selected for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Graduate Research Award.

 

Susan Maude, HDFS Associate Professor, has been awarded the 2009 Miller Faculty Fellowship to address content, practica, and program practices of the Early Childhood Education program as it infuses culture, linguistic, and ability diversity. Sedahlia Crase, HDFS Professor, has been awarded the 2008 Iowa State University Margaret Ellen White Graduate Faculty Award. This award recognizes superior performance by a member of the graduate faculty who serves as a mentor and who enriches the student-professor relationship through support and attention to detail, enabling students to finish their work in a timely and scholarly manner.

 

Susan Hegland, HDFS Associate Professor, has been awarded the 2008 Iowa State University Regents Award for Faculty Excellence. This award recognizes a faculty member who is an understanding university citizen who has rendered significant service to Iowa State and/or the state of Iowa. Additional criteria for the award is that the faculty member must have distinction in a minimum of two of the following four areas: teaching, research/creative activity, extension/professional practice, or service.

 

Lesia Oesterreich, HDFS Extension Program Specialist in Family Life, has been awarded the 2008 Iowa State University Regents Award for Staff Excellence. This award recognizes a member of the professional and scientific staff who is an outstanding university citizen and has rendered significant service to Iowa State and/or the state of Iowa.

 

Mary Yearns, HDFS Professor of Extension, received a national award for advancing housing for seniors. Yearns has been recognized for improving housing for the elderly. Yearns was presented with the National Institute of Senior Housing's Sid Spector Memorial Award on Mar. 29, 2008 at the annual joint National Council on Aging-American Society on Aging conference.

 

Markie Blumer, HDFS Ph.D. candidate, received the 2007 National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) Student Award. This prestigious award is given to an NCFR graduate student member who has demonstrated excellence as a student with high potential for contribution to the field of family studies. Blumer's major professor is Dr. Megan Murphy.

 

Kimberly Greder, HDFS Associate Professor and Extension Specialist, received the 2007 National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) Early Achievement Award for her contributions to the field of parent education. The Early Achievement Award is given on an annual basis to a Family Life Extension Specialist who has demonstrated the impact of their work outside of their home state and provides solid evidence of impact on people's lives. Greder is the primary author and leader of a campus-field team that developed an 11 module comprehensive peer reviewed training curriculum for parenting educators titled, Partnering with Parents: Walking the Journey Together (www.extension.iastate.edu/pwp).

 

Lesia Oesterreich, HDFS Extension Program Specialist in Family Life, received the 2007 National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) Career Achievement Award for her contributions to improving child care in Iowa. During her career, Lesia has developed educational programs to help child care professionals improve the care they provide and conducted research that has guided public policy to improve child care.

Markie L.C. Blumer, HDFS Ph.D. Graduate, received the 2007 Iowa State University Graduate College Teaching Excellence Award.

 

Wan-Juo Cheng, HDFS Ph.D. Graduate, received the 2007 Iowa State University Graduate College Research Excellence Award.


Mary Sue Green, HDFS Ph.D. candidate, received the Graduate Student of the Year Award, Iowa Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (2007).

 

Mary Sue Green, HDFS Ph.D. candidate, received an Outstanding Faculty Honor, Iowa State University Interfraternity Counsel and Collegiate Panhellenic Council (2007).

 

Mary Sue Green, HDFS Ph.D. candidate, received the YWCA Ames-ISU Women of Achievement Scholarship, for her contribution to eliminating racism and/or empowering women (2007).
