HDFS Departmental Scholarship OpportunitiesOctober 2009
Dear Human Development and Family Studies Major: We are pleased to announce the availability of undergraduate scholarships for students who are obtaining a Bachelor's degree in a Human Development and Family Studies curriculum: Marie Roberts Barnard Scholarships are for majors in Early Childhood Education (ECE) who have a record of academic excellence and are in financial need. Freda R. Riecken Award. This award gives preference to adult students(25+ years of age) who are returning to school to study Child, Adult and Family Services (ChFS) or Family Finance, Housing and Policy (FFHP) and have demonstrated academic excellence in their work. If there are no adult student candidates for the Riecken scholarship, the department may then give the award to any other undergraduate in the same curricula identified above and who has displayed outstanding ability in his or her studies. The amount of the awards are $500 per year. Dr. Mary Ellen and Dr. Glenn A. Atwood Scholarship. This scholarship of $1,000 is available to students majoring in Child, Adult and Family Services or students working toward licensure in Early Childhood Education. This scholarship gives priority to married students who are in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need. Other considerations taken into account for this award include demonstrated participation in departmental, college and/or university activities, as well as community activities. Louise J. Peet Memorial Award for Excellence. This award shall be open to undergraduate students majoring in Child, Adult and Family Studies (ChFS) or Family Finance, Housing and Policy (FFHP) curriculum. Naheel Jeries Scholarship. This scholarship is open to all students classified as juniors who are enrolled in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies.John R. and Eloise Mountain Wright Scholarship. This award gives preference to a student majoring in Child Development area, i.e. ChFS or ECE. This scholarship gives priority to single mothers, mothers exhibiting financial need, and to international students. Additionally, special consideration given to applicants associated with Cedar or Muscatine Counties. Kathleen W. McCartan Scholarship. This award was established in memory of Dr. Kathleen McCartan, who was a faculty member in the early childhood field working with children with disabilities. The $500 award is available for a student who is majoring in Early Childhood Education, has a record of academic excellence and demonstrates financial need. Priority will be given to students interested in working with children with disabilities. Human Development and Family Studies Scholarship Fund. This award was established by a current faculty member in the department. Currently funding is available to provide general scholarship suport for current undergraduate students in the department who are majoring in Early Childhood Education. Recipients for the scholarships will be selected by the Department of Human Development and Family Studies based on the respective eligibility requirements stated above, and also listed on the attached scholarship application form. This form must be completed by February 14, 2010. We plan to announce the awards by the end of April 2010.
Several of the scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need. If you are interested in applying for these scholarships, you must authorize a copy of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be sent to HDFS (see last page of application form).
