Ames, Iowa – Carl Weems, Professor of Human Development and Family Studies, has been appointed Behrer Youth Policy Faculty Fellow for a five-year term. An internationally recognized scholar in child and youth development, traumatic stress and resilience, Weems has secured more than $38 million in external funding, published more than 170 peer-reviewed articles and authored The Neuroscience of Pediatric PTSD.

As principal investigator of Iowa State University’s Child Welfare Research and Training Project, Weems leads statewide efforts to apply research and data to child welfare policy, practice and workforce training. His work aligns with the fellowship’s goal of improving outcomes for youth in foster care through research and data-informed policy.

Weems will use fellowship funds to support work with the Iowa Aftercare Services Network, which serves youth transitioning to adulthood from foster care. The project will analyze data from the National Youth in Transition Database to compare state outcomes and develop national performance rankings to inform policy in Iowa and beyond.
