During my internship at Lilypad, I had classroom teacher and office assistant responsibilities. In the office, I created promotional pamphlets, worked on various classroom projects, answered phone calls, and created and organized child and staff files. In the classroom, my responsibilities were to provide quality care for children ages 1-11, engage and interact with throughout the day, and assist with implementing lesson plans.
My greatest accomplishment would be creating relationships with the children at across all age levels. I felt like a teacher that the children felt safe with and depended on for care.
This experience taught me the ins-and-outs of childcare. I had the opportunity to work on office tasks, that showed me how Lilypad works from the classroom level to the administrative level. I learned how to communicate with families, create a monthly menu, file documents, and create graphics. I also was able to step in for the Directors when they were out of the office, which taught me how to effectively communicate with staff.
What advice would you give?
Take the time to fully understand the importance of what you do and how it can make a difference in the lives of the population you’re serving.
