Responsibilities

Every day, I had direct contact with clients in the form of going through assistance applications, entry and exit forms, answering phones/ doors and interactions with the transitional families. I helped with essential tasks to help the shelter run smoothly such as organizing and sorting through donations, running shelter errands, and completing any paper work for clients. Throughout the semester, I also had many mini projects such as outreach for Reggie's Sleepout, and training new volunteers.

Accomplishments

One of my greatest accomplishments during this experience is that now, I can sit down with any client that comes through the door and help them to work through whatever situation that they may be in. I am aware of many of the resources that may be of help to them in Ames, and if we can't help them at the shelter, I know places that I can refer them to. I have had many positive interactions with clients helping them navigate the system.

What advice would you give?

Make sure to ask questions during your internship. Your supervisors have most likely been working in the field for a long time and have a lot of experience and advice that they can share with you.
