Diversity, Equity, and Community Committee Spring 2020 Brown Bag Series: Beyond Disengagement – Understanding Latinx High School Youth’s Silence as an Act of Survival
All Day

1009 LeBaron Conference Room
This presentation, given by Gabriel Rodriguez, Assistant Professor in the School of Education, considers what Latinx youth attending a predominantly white and well-resourced suburban high school can teach us about the varied ways silence is employed. Rodriguez calls this "silence on a continuum," and advocates shifting focus onto deficit-based structures and discourses to dismantle them.
