Every Experience Matters: Mia Catalano
Mia Catalano always knew she wanted to make a difference in the lives of young children. During her time at Iowa State, one experience in particular—working closely with a child with Down syndrome—solidified her desire to create inclusive, supportive classrooms where every child can thrive.
“That experience gave me a whole new perspective,” Catalano said. “It really opened my eyes to the importance of supporting students with unique abilities.”
A native of Urbandale, Iowa, Catalano always felt a special connection to Iowa State’s campus. She appreciated the university’s perfect balance: a large campus that still felt close-knit, and just a short drive from home. Her decision to attend the university was further solidified by her older brother’s positive experience as a Cyclone. This sense of familiarity and comfort made her transition to college life seamless.
Initially drawn to elementary education, Catalano later shifted her focus to early childhood education (ECE). As an ECE major, she formed strong bonds with her classmates and professors.
“I’ve felt so supported here,” she said. “The people in the ECE program have really motivated me to make an impact as a future teacher.”
One class that especially resonated with her was Social-Emotional Development and Guidance, taught by Human Development and Family Studies professor Tricia Neppl.

“Dr. Neppl’s experience and the way she cares about her students really inspired me,” Catalano said. “I hope to make similar connections with my own students and give them a nurturing learning space.”
Outside the classroom, Catalano brought energy and school spirit to her role on Iowa State’s dance team, performing at wrestling and volleyball. Her involvement in the dance team also provided her with another tight-knit community on campus.
Now graduated, Catalano is completing her student teaching in both preschool and first-grade classrooms. She’s excited to apply what she’s learned and continue advocating for inclusive, nurturing environments where all kids feel they belong.
“I’m really grateful for everything Iowa State has given me,” she said. “Every little experience added up, and now I feel ready to lead my own classroom.”
