Jenna Fisher strives to inspire and support as a teacher, builds community at Iowa State

Jenna Fisher was torn on what major she wanted to pursue at Iowa State University, so during high school she took courses through Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) to help solidify her decision before arriving in Ames. It was through this experience that she confirmed her love for teaching. 

“Taking those classes helped me decide that I definitely wanted to pursue this path. I have always had an interest in working with children, so I am so excited to have my own classroom,” Jenna said. 

Jenna currently holds two jobs that keep her passionate about teaching. She has worked at a local daycare in her hometown, Norwalk, Iowa, since her senior year of high school. She returns there to work during summer and over breaks. When school is in session, she works as an America Reads America Counts tutor at Sawyer Elementary School in Ames. 

Outside of her job experience, Jenna’s involvement in classes and organizations on campus have further sparked her passion for the education field. These organizations include The HDFS Club and an HDFS Learning Community.

“[My classes] have brought out my passion for my career field, and the excitement to start it,” Jenna said. “I enjoy taking classes involved directly with my major, so I am able to learn and educate myself about it even more.”

Jenna has decided after graduation she would like to work with lower elementary aged kids and/or in a special education teaching position. Growing up with amazing teachers has motivated her to follow suit and become a support system for her future students. 

“Being a teacher, no day is the same. Every day that you walk into that building, something new could happen. I want to make a huge difference in kids’ lives,” she said. 

As she works through her time at Iowa State, Jenna feels supported and encouraged by her fellow students in the early childhood education program. 

“You basically get another family away from home if you’re in this program. It has made me become close to lots of people in my major, and I’ve made a lot of friends from it,” Jenna said.
